PacMan: The only reason I made a comparison to boxing and horse racing is because when college football first started there were no other sports. And horse racing and boxing were the biggest of them all, even with baseball thrown in the mix.

I did read the Yahoo! article and thought it was a very good article. It's virtually the same one that someone writes every year for Yahoo!

And, as this article was written a couple years ago, I'll concede your point about academics. I see Div 1AA in their playoffs and realize that the commish's arguments about adding games don't add up. The only thing that's keeping the farce in place that currently exists is the bowl lobby. There may be a lot more money on the table for football, but those who own the bowls now would potentially stand to lose a share or two. In a way it is greed that keeps the system in place as it is, even though there are millions--if not billions--more dollars to be made by adopting any other system.

Keep in mind, I'm not opposed to a playoff. My argument when I wrote this (though possibly poorly stated) was that I didn't think it would happen, and I was trying to offer up an alternative that I don't think anyone else had thought of. But I do believe that ANYTHING would be better than the system we've got.

So you want to copy the English Soccer mold yet not as well? The only way this type of system works is if the Super League is small enough that a round robin is possible. The English Premier teams play all other teams twice. 1 home and 1 away. 2 points for a win and 1 point for a tie. End of season most points is the champion. Bottom 2 drop to the lower conference. For this to work you need to make the Bowls even LESS important. No more BCS championship game - that would be a playoff, and you dont like those.

Your plan is a compromise when a compromise is not needed a playoff is 100% better.

Comparing Football to boxing and horse racing is stretch to say the least. Boxing is a sham and a mess, Horse-racing and less popular than it has ever been in history and both are not team sports.

Yahoo sports laid out the playoff system perfectly. Read the article, it explains a 16 team playoff perfectly. The article addressed EVERY "but what about" and objection you have developed. Academics, schedule, bowls, MONEY, school presidents - etc.

Last point - Your academics argument is moot. Div 1AA plays a playoff and those athletes are FAR more "student athletes" than Division 1A. Holy Cross, Lehigh, Colgate, Harvard, Yale, Princeton, Georgetown - these students seem to cope just fine with the extra games when they make the Div IAA playoff.. Besides Football players miss FAR less class than any other NCAA major sport.

Ha, I'm from Big Ten country so we son't agree on much, but I'm with you here.
The sooner you realize Cowturd is a worthless skeleton hack with no insight into sports and a laughable tendency to use the most innaccurate similes possible, the sooner his bullshit career will be over.

Mr. Mitchell:

I happened to run across one of your websites:

http://mattmitchellfiction.com/unabashed/category/ruminations/

that contained an image of a photograph of a luna moth that I actually took.

I'm honored that you found the photo worthy of publishing on your site, but would appreciate a little byline and link to my website: Photo by S J Carter (www.sjcarterphotography.com).

I understand that it's easy to grab stuff off the Internet, but I make my living with photography, so a little credit for the stuff that I've done is all I ask.

Thanks.

You make some very valid points. You have stated your position well. I personally would like to see a playoff system. Primarily because I think that it gives better opportunities for teams that would not normally meet a chance to play against each other. My personal opinion is that this would actually give us a better indication in the end of who has the best team. But, you do make a very good point with the potential of pulling 1st stringers in the final stretch if your team is doing well. On the other hand, with college football so competitive I'm not so sure this is the same situation we have with the NFL near post season.

The one thing that I do really need to call you on those is this statement, "It doesn’t become a popular sport until March. Everything leading up to that is filler." I think this statement is grossly exagerated. While there might be a hint of truth to this, college basketball (for the larger schools with good programs) is very popular. Just try getting Illini tickets at Assembly Hall, tough to come by. I think what some may perceive as a lack of popularity during the season is really just more of a difference in the way the sport is played. With football, you pretty much have 1 game per week on Saturdays (yes I know there are exceptions to this, but bear with me). Basketball on the other hand has multiple games per week. While a typical football season consists of a dozen games, basketball players are more likely to hit the court about 30 times. The volume of games is totally different so you're just not going to see the same kind of turnout for basketball that you see with football. The same is true of media coverage. It doesn't mean it's not popular, just a sport that is played very differently from football.

Thanks for sharing your thoughts on this subject. I really enjoyed your posting.
